VW ID. Tiguan confirmed: electric SUV to replace ID.4 and ID.5 from 2027

VW Confirms ID. Tiguan To Replace The ID.4 And ID.5

Volkswagen has confirmed the name of its next electric family SUV, and it marks a significant shift in strategy. The ID. Tiguan will replace both the ID.4 and the ID.5, retiring two badges that together accounted for more than 950,000 sales in Europe since 2021, according to figures released by Volkswagen.

The announcement signals a clear change of direction at Wolfsburg. After years of building a separate identity around the ID. prefix, Volkswagen is folding its electric models back into the names buyers already know. The ID. Tiguan follows the same logic as the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, and it arrives as the company’s combustion Tiguan and Tayron together passed one million global deliveries in the past year.

Volkswagen ID. Tiguan: an electric Tiguan, not another ID

The new model will sit alongside the combustion Tiguan rather than replace it. That gives Volkswagen a dual-powertrain line-up in the same segment, with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions of the existing car continuing on sale next to the electric newcomer.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, framed the decision around continuity. “The all-electric model builds on the strengths of the bestseller and offers premium design, generous space, intuitive operation, and innovative technologies,” he said. “Tiguan represents a versatile, premium vehicle and embodies the essence of a true Volkswagen. With the ID. Tiguan, we are carrying this product promise into the electric future. Together, both models form a strong offering for our customers’ different powertrain preferences.”

That last point matters. Volkswagen is not betting the family SUV segment on electric alone. It is hedging, and using a familiar badge to make the electric option feel less like a leap of faith.

Why the ID.4 and ID.5 are being discontinued

The numbers suggest the ID.4 and ID.5 were not failures. More than 950,000 combined sales in Europe since 2021 is a respectable return for a pair of models that arrived during a global pandemic and a semiconductor shortage. The ID.4 in particular became one of Europe’s most visible electric cars, and it remains a common sight on motorways and retail parks.

But the ID. naming convention never quite caught the public imagination in the way Volkswagen hoped. Badges like ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5 are functional rather than evocative, and they sit awkwardly next to a range that includes Golf, Polo, Passat and Tiguan. Reviving the Tiguan name for an electric model removes a layer of explanation. Buyers already know what a Tiguan is.

The timing also reflects a broader pattern of heritage revivals across the industry, something we explored in our 2026 Automotive Preview: Revived Icons, Electric Extremes, and the EV Sweet Spot. Familiar names are proving easier to sell than new ones, particularly as electric car buyers become more mainstream and less willing to accept unfamiliarity as part of the package.

Design: boxier, more traditional, closer to the combustion car

Prototype images show a noticeably boxier silhouette than the ID.4 and ID.5, with a more upright, traditional SUV stance. That is a deliberate move away from the swept, coupe-influenced lines of the outgoing pair, and it brings the electric model visually closer to the combustion Tiguan.

Details visible on the disguised prototypes include chunky pop-out door handles, replacing the flush flap-style items on the ID.4, along with slim LED headlights and daytime running lights, a black lower grille, small air curtains at the edges of the bumper, low-set wing mirrors and roof rails. At the rear, there is a new bumper, tailgate and window, though the taillights on the prototypes are not production specification.

Volkswagen has released images of two different versions without explaining how they differ. One features small front air intakes, while the other has vertical LED daytime running lights and a unique lower grille treatment. Whether these represent different trim levels, regional variants or something else has not been confirmed.

Platform, batteries and the return of physical buttons

The ID. Tiguan is expected to use Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform, an evolution of the architecture underneath the current ID.4. The outgoing car offers 58 kWh and 79 kWh battery packs, and the new model is expected to receive larger and more efficient units.

Volkswagen has been steadily updating its battery and drivetrain technology, and the ID. Tiguan should benefit from improved range, faster charging and better cold-weather performance as a result. For reference, Volkswagen quotes the 2026 ID.4 at up to 351 miles on the WLTP cycle, a European homologation figure that has climbed steadily since launch.

Inside, expect Volkswagen’s latest interior design and infotainment system, including the return of physical buttons. That change has already appeared on the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, and it addresses one of the most persistent criticisms of the early ID. models, where touch-sensitive sliders and minimal switchgear frustrated owners. No interior images of the ID. Tiguan have been released.

Launch timing and markets

The ID. Tiguan will make its official debut in early October 2026, with no specific date confirmed. It goes on sale in early 2027, starting in Europe. North America will follow at a later date, with other global markets arriving shortly after Europe. Volkswagen has not announced UK pricing or specifications.

The brand’s electric rollout has not always run to schedule. The Volkswagen ID. Buzz US Launch Delayed Again: Now Arriving as a 2028 Model is a reminder that timelines can slip, particularly where North American homologation and production planning are involved. Whether the ID. Tiguan avoids similar delays remains to be seen.

For now, the confirmation of the ID. Tiguan marks the end of one naming experiment and the beginning of another. The ID.4 and ID.5 will fade out, and Volkswagen will let the powertrain speak for itself.
